Some cancer treatments can significantly affect future fertility, making early reproductive counseling an essential part of patient-centered oncology care. To explore how clinicians can better support these conversations, we recently spoke with Dr. Irene Su, Director of the Reproductive Survivorship Program at UC San Diego Health and Professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Dr. Su examines the evolving field of oncofertility, highlighting the importance of timely fertility preservation referrals, coordinated communication between oncology and reproductive specialists, and system-level processes that help ensure patients receive comprehensive reproductive care throughout their cancer journey.
